Old Fashion Cocktails are now the new fashion! Whiskies and bourbons have come a long way since they were first created. Old Fashion drinks were first noted in the May 13, 1806 issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository as a “potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar.” It was previously known as a bittered sling. Hudson, NY is where the newsletter originated from, so you can essentially say this is where the cocktail was created. It wasn’t until 1833 when J.E. Alexander describes a very similar cocktail he discovered, again in New York, with bitters, water, sugar, and either rum, gin, or brandy. It’s time to bring the Old Fashion into New Fashion with our Hella Gentleman Whiskey Gift Basket!

What better way to serve an Old Fashion than on a stunning silver tray?! There isn’t – so that’s exactly what we did. Our silver tray carries a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack Whiskey along with crackers, cheese spread, and nuts for snacking. We are serious about keeping this old-fashioned. But we didn’t stop there. We also included two fancy glasses for your convenience and a bar set of bitters from the Hella Bitters Company, which also happened to be based in New York!
A bar set of bitters usually includes 5 flavors in 1.7-ounce bottles. Hella Bitters bar set has five flavors included: smoked chili, citrus, aromatic, orange, and ginger. Bitters are usually used as an additive, flavored by botanicals, to add a sour or bittersweet flavor to alcohols; as the Hella Bitters Co. states: “They’re like salt and pepper for your drinks!”

To create an Old Fashion Cocktail, add sugar to your liking into an “old fashioned” glass (usually one with a flat, firm base) then add the bitters of your choice. We recommend tasting the bitters first so you know how much of which flavor you would like to add. Also in the glass, add a splash of water or club soda. Add ice and Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack into the glass and stir until minimal sugar is left. Take an orange or lemon twist and rim around the top of the glass, drop the rind into the cocktail, and enjoy!
