Chianti is a wine produces in the Chianti region of Central Tuscany in Italy. Chianti is historically associated with a “squat bottle” which is enclosed in a straw basket called a fiasco. Fiascos are rarely used by wine makers now as Chianti is bottled in standard bottles. In the middle of the 19th-century, Baron Bettino Ricasoli – who later became the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy – crafted the Chianti blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, and 15% Malvasia Bianca.
The Chianti region was first founded in 1716 near the villages of Gaiole Castellina and Radda. They were later known as the Lega del Chianti and Provincia del Chianti. It wasn’t until 1932 that the area was re-drawn and divided into seven smaller areas: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano and Rùfina. Classico is the biggest sub-area of Chianti and the neck of the bottle may be marked with a black rooster (gallo nero.) This indicates the producer of the wine. During the 1970s, wine producers started to limit the amount of white grapes in the wine. In 1995, it was finally legal to produce a Chianti with 100% Sangiovese grapes. If the Chianti is aged 38 months, in comparison to the usual 4-7, it can be labelled as “Riserva” If the vineyard had a lower yield, higher alcohol context, and a dry extract it may be labelled as “Chianti Superiore.” Wine from the Classico sub-area is not allowed to label their products “Superiore” under any circumstances.
